Early rolls have a heavier grained dark brown vinyl. The later bags have an almost polished light grained dark brown vinyl. Both types of bags are lined with a black canvas material. The heavier grained bag is much less common. The leather tends to dry out over time and can crack and tear. A leather conditioner such as Lexol is recommended. A period correct reproduction tool roll is satisfactory for concours.
